Abbreviated scheme for presumptive identification of Staphylococcus saprophyticus from urine cultures.
A simplified scheme for the presumptive identification of Staphylococcus saprophyticus was investigated. Clinical isolates of Micrococcaceae were tested in microtiter plates containing phenol red-novobiocin-turanose broth and phenol red-arabinose broth. Standard saline suspensions of test organisms served as inoculum. Identifying features were growth within 18 to 24 h in novobiocin-turanose bro...
متن کاملRecognition of Staphylococcus saprophyticus in urine cultures by screening colonies for production of phosphatase.
Phenolphthalein diphosphate was incorporated into a primary blood agar medium for use in performing quantitative urine cultures. Phosphatase-negative staphylococci, such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus, were differentiated from phosphatase-positive species, such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, by spot testing colonies on filter paper saturated with 1 N NaOH. Phosphatase-positive colonies turned ...
متن کاملUse of a novobiocin-containing medium for isolation of Staphylococcus saprophyticus from urine.
The use of a novobiocin-containing medium provided little benefit over observable quantitative growth on blood agar in detecting Staphylococcus saprophyticus in urine cultures.
متن کاملStaphylococcus saprophyticus hemagglutinin binds fibronectin.
Attachment of microorganisms to host tissue is regarded as an important step in the pathogenesis of infections. Staphylococcus saprophyticus adheres to various epithelial cells and hemagglutinates sheep erythrocytes. The hemagglutinin has been identified, but a human target for this surface protein is still not known. In our report, we show that hemagglutinating strains of S. saprophyticus bind...
متن کاملMicrobiological characteristics, presumptive identification, and antibiotic susceptibilities of Staphylococcus lugdunensis.
This study validated abbreviated methods for the presumptive identification of Staphylococcus lugdunensis and studied the antibiotic susceptibilities of 106 isolates. The combination of positive responses to ornithine and pyrrolidonyl arylamidase identified all S. lugdunensis isolates. Resistance to penicillin and methicillin was detected in 27 and 5% of isolates, respectively.
